A absolute neccessity is to dig in a staircase once you get a wooden pickaxe to get a stone pickaxe. Then find some iron and make yourself full iron armor and an iron sword. Diamonds are rare, if you find some, grab it because it will be a neccessity. But if you don’t find any, just mass iron and become an IronKing.

Moss cobblestone can a few things. The most significant is there can be loot chests guarded by a spawner. If it’s a zombie spawner, it’ll be guarded by zombies and moss cobblestone. If it’s a spider spawner, it’ll be guarded by spiders, moss cobblestone, AND cobwebs.
Loot can usually mean iron ingots, CDs, or food. Or all of the three.

Btw, you never really need a wood sword unless there is an immediate threat nearby.

I always make one so I’ll be ready when a threat comes.

The only wood tool you ever really need is a pickaxe, so you could also have just used stone for eveerything else and made it a lot faster.

Also, I usually just dig a hole in a cliff for my first shelter. I don’t usually have time to collect a lot of wood.

Really? Huh. The first thing I do is cut down a few of the nearest trees. Sometimes if there is a cave nearby I’ll make my shelter there, but otherwise, I’ll just make a house.

Houses take too long and I don’t like making them on my first day. Also, wooden houses burn or blow up too easily anyway. I usually don’t build a house until I have at least an inventory full of cobblestone. I dig tunnels under the ground, and I use coordinates to make sure the mineshaft in my house will connect to one of them, therefore making my mineshafts a gigantic escape chamber in case something happens to my house.
That is also good if I’m playing on smp with my friends.

Btw, my friends like to troll, you know, with raiding other’s houses and stuff. But I just use my (hacked and enchanted with every single enchant to level 32767) boots, jump into my escape cannon, and I get shot so far away that if my position while on the cannon was a pixel off to one direction, I would be hundreds of blocks away.

The mossy cobblestone thing is just a random thing that generates naturally.
This close to the surface, there wont be any dungeons.
